During our Literature Circle discussion, Mrs. Watson gave us four discussion questions:
- How does religion play a role in their lives?
- What is Lock, Stock, and Barrel?
- Are there any metaphors for trees, vines, snake, seedling, rotted stump, spider, okapi?
- What is the significance of the last line of the book, “Walk forward into the light.”
In the first part of our discussion, we discussed the different religions each Price girl believes in.
We were saying that Rachel worships herself. She showed this by the hotel and money that also represents herself as a person. Leah who is refferred to as “The Creation.” Adah is a person that believes in science or also known as the “witch Doctor.”
During the second part of our discussion, we went over who represents Lock, stock, and barrel.
We concluded that on pg. 531 Rachel represents the lock which throws the past out and locks up the past emotions. Leah represents the barrel in meaning that the barrel represents going forward and setting things straight. Adah takes stock, one who observes but goes unnoticed but important.
In the third part of our discussion we went over the metaphors of nature throughout the whole last part of the book.
Then tree represents America. The vines strangle the Congolese people and Mobutu is powerful. Snake represents Mobutu being sneaky. The seedlings are the Villagers. The rotted stump was the different villages going bad. Spider represented getting rid of problems. We didn’t finish talking about the Okapi.
The last line in the book, “Walk forward in to the light,” means that it’s o.k., forgiveness, and don’t feel guilty anymore, to always feel redempted.
I feel that we had a good discussion because it was the end of the book and everybody was involved.

Literature Circle Reflection- Exodus
During our literature Circle discussion, we discussed about how Ruth May's journey was short meaning that she i=died but the main thing is that her soul still lives on.
We talked about Rachel during Exodus and that she was simple, she didn't change the least and she seems the same by not getting nothing out of it even though Ruth May died.
when Ruth May died, Leah's whole life changed totally; she doesn't fit in anywhere anymore because she feels awkward in america and in the Congo.
Adah also changed completely meaning that Adah and Leah both have the same feelings and they both don't feel happy in the end.
We talked about the different reactions of the Price girls in Exodus:
Rachel is still trying to be independent, gold digger, and uses people in cluding the husbands. Adah is good at expressing herself.Leah is lovestruck with Anatole and feels guiltfor ruth May and the Father.
During Exodus, we discussed about the similarities and differences between Leah and Orleanna and that they are both devoted to husbands and the difference is that Leah loves Anatole but Orleanna doesn't.
We also talked about the similarities and differences between Anatole and Nathan. The similarity between them both was that they both were passionate and they both believed in deep devotion. The difference between them both is that anatole cares for othersbut Nathan wants God's acceptance.
They are also were both willing to take risks like jail, and family.
one detail is that all the Price girls have guilt, find a redemption but they got diffenrent.

Free Post- My Goal For Life
My one goal for my entire life is to graduate from high school pleasing my parents. along with that, I want to be able to get a full ride scholarship to either Oregon or Washington in either Baseball or Football. If i ever do get into College, I want to play professionally in either Baseball or Football because I want to do this for one person in my life and that is my Dad because he has sacrificed all his time taking off work just to make sure that me and him are out there on the field working out. I must admit working out with my Dad is like taking a walk through hell, you can't breathe, you can't walk, and you can't think; all you think about is how tired you are and how much water you want to drink. I know I shouldn't being saying these kind of things but it's true. This why this one goal is so important to me, for my family.

Literature Reflection- Bel and the Serpent
In our Literature Circle we reflected on the similarities and differences between Bantu and Muntu and we concluded that Bantu was a typical person more spiritually than physically and Muntu was a living person, a dead person, or a person that was not yet born.
We also talked about how Orleanna's section in the Bel and the Serpent was different than the other books.
In our Lit. Circle group we talked about the different reactions toward Ruth May's death from every one of the Price daughters perspective.
We talked about Leahs reaction which she was kind of shaken up about it. Rachel which in the book said, " not a vacation and go back to U.S. and live the same way." Rachel extents herself and talks about how she was kind of alright when ruth May died but more so feeling for her mother Orleanna.
Adah's reaction was that she had a palendrome which it says on page 360.

Similarities and Differences
Some of the similarities between the Mosquito Coast and The Poisonwood Bible are that in both of them, both fathers use physical abuse towards their wives. Both fathers are also crazy. in the Mosquito Coast, there are four kids and a set of twins as well as in the Poisonwood Bible there were four kids and set of twins. Harrison Ford who is Allie Fox in the movie is really crazy because at the end, he purposely burned down the church. One difference between the Mosquito Coast and The Poisonwood Bible is that Allie was alll about bringing industry to a society that wasn't even touched. Another relation between the Mosquito Coast and the Poisonwood Bible is that Mr. Haddie dies in the Mosquito Coast and Ruth May Price dies in the Poisonwood Bible. Mr. Haddie and Anatole are also like the same person. One last similarity that I feel is pretty important is Allies invention which could be a bad thing or a good thing because it was llike the bible; it could have a positive effect or a negative effect. The inventions negative effect was the three invading bad guys but the positive effect was that it brought air conditioning.

I am orange and black.
Shaped from man made materials.
I like the feel of natural leather.
I am round, smooth and like to bounce.
I am a sophisticated sphere.
Sometimes I hangout in car trunk.
Sometimes I hangout in a closet.
When used correctly, you will find me
hanging out on a basketball court.
Twenty minutes a day, you’re freezing cold.
An hour or two, you’re getting warmer
Spending time with me all day, you’re hot.
Some people have a hard time using me.
For others, it’s a little easier.
I maybe used as a ticket to college.
Not alone, studies walk with me hand in hand.
I am a basketball, you make your dreams possible.

Congo:2000-2007
During the se years of the Congo from 1955 through 1966, a big fight erupted between nations such as Ugandan and Rwnadan forces in kisangani as it always had before in the past years.
In Jan.2001 Kabila was assasinated by a bodyguard and surprisingly by his son. even though Gen. Kabila had died, his government through peace negotiations, and ended the ban on political parties. Also in these years, fights between the militia and nations has continued and causing more problems.
By the year of 2002 most of the foreign trips of the Congo were withdrawn from the Congo.
even though the peace deals were signed, fighting was still continuing in the parts of the congo, especially between the tribal groups in the east and in June of 2003, the United Nations dispatched French-Led peacekeepers to East congo in a huge effort to restore order.
In the end of July 2006, Congo held elections for president and the National and Provisional legislatures.

Literature Circle #2- New Critic
For our Literature Circle #2, I was received the job of the New Critic.
Here are some critical passages that i thought in my mind were pretty important to me.
" I pictured myself a ghost: bones and teeth. Rachel a ghost with long white hair; Adah a silent, staring ghost. Ruth May, a tree climbing ghost, a sqeeze hand on your arm. My father was not a ghost; he was God with his back turned, hands clapsed behind him and fierce eyes on the clouds. God had turned his back and was walking away(310)."
" When I want to take God at his word exactly, i take a peek out the window at His Creation. Beacause that, darling, he makes fresh for us every day without a lot of dubious middle managers(248)."
" I don't think Dad ever forgave me, later on, for becoming a free Will Baptist. He failed to see why anyone would need more bluster and testimony about God's plan than what he found, for example, within the fine-veined world of an eyeball. That, and a good chicken dinner on Sundays. Dad drank and cursed some but not in anyway that mattered."
These passages seemed really important to me because it felt that all 3 of these passage had to do with some part of the conflict in this section of this story.

Literature Circle Notes-Revelation
In our literatue Circle for Revelation, the psychological critic talks about Nathan Price. he talks about how Nathan Price is a terrible man because of the way he treats people. We were talking about how Nathan comes to the Congo and tries to convert people to Christianity but Nathan doesn't seem to care about no one but himself. Nathan doesn't even seem like a caring person because when his family gets hurt, he says, "that God will handle them." The way that i feel about this I think that Nathan is a non-caring person because all he cares about is himself and doesn't want anybody to win but himself.
Some of the famous words that we learned about in Revelation through our Literature Circle are Bangala which means the poisonwood tree, and Mbote which means hello and goodbye. This is pretty much the main things that we learned about in our Literature circle.

Rachel is trying to distance herself from the Congo and Nathan is trying to change. Nathan also speaks the kikongo wrong.

Baptiza- Baptism to terrritory.
Group 3- the ants clean out the bugs that the Congolese don't want. ( The ants are always looking for water.)

Maui trip!!!!!
Last weekend I went on a Maui trip for four days. These days were one of the coolest days of my life. The best thing about goping on this trip was that we were in a baseball tournament up there in which we won. We ended up winning the whole tournament against four other teams that were pretty tough to beat. Playing in a tournament in Maui was really exciting because it was a traveling trip and it's always fun to travel to the outerisland to play sports such as baseball. Even though we were tired for couple days, we still ended up beating the outerisland teams that already lived up there.
This trip was so fun because it seemed like everybody on the team was just clicking at every crucial moment during the game because we hit the ball like there was no tomorrow. We had lots of fun hanging out the Maui mall watching movies and playing at arcades such as Wild Hogs which was a very funny movie and playing at Fun Factory.
I will never forget about this trip because I don't think we will probably ever go on these kind of trips ever again.

Ten Quotes with significant explanation

The significance of this quote is that Leah is trying to say that God brought everything to this earth without harm and without trouble.
" At first they'd insulted my father by turning us down, even after our Bethlehem congregation had done special tithes for a whole year to fly us here for the perfusion of Jesus' name."
The significance of this quote is to explain that since they are catholics, they were trying so hard to make sure that they get certification from the mission league so that they can be allowed to come.

Leah price sounds like a person that has many words to say about anything in her life such as the congo light. I feel that her role as a character is more on the controlling side because it seems like she is the type of person that tries to prove that she is right.
"We wore our best dresses on the outside to make a good impression. Rachel wore her green linen Easter suit she was so vain of, and her long whitish hair pulled off her forehead with a wide pink elastic hairband."
Leah sounds like that she is uptight in this quote about worrying about what she has to be wearing.

Ruth May Price is more like the religous person in this story because she is always talking about how God the Man above is always right and necer wrong which is true in any way.
Rachel Price:" And the dirt, law! There was dirt everywhere like red chalk dust, and me with my good green linen suit on the outside, wouldn't you know."
Rachel Price sounds like the type of person that is high maintenance and such a clean person because she is always worried about how she looks and what surroundings are so that she doesn't get dirty.
"My embroidery hoops and a pair ofpinking shears in an oilcloth sheath hung around my neck, threatening myself and others in the push and shove."
This quote shows how Rachel Price is so prepy because she is wearing like all kind of wierd clothes I havenever ever heard of before.
Adah Price:"They can sit, stand, talk, shake a stick at a drunk man, reach around their back to fetch forth a baby to nurse, all without dropping their piled-high bundles upon bundles."
This quote explains how Adah Price is a judger in different ways in how men stand and sit down. Adah Price also sounds like she judges people in how they act in different situations.

Be fruitful , and multiply, and replenish the earth,
and subdue it: and have dominion
over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
I think what God is trying to say is to be respectful of what surroundings are around you and to always acknowledge the word of the lord.
God is trying to give every man on earth the chance to rein over everything that they possibly can.
God is still saying that he is not giving anybody the power to crush the environmentally and physically. To not destroy all of its beauty and purity. Mankind is what people think is the problem for environmentally concerns.

Group Question #2
Much is expected of those to whom much is given. What have you been given, and what, if any, expectations do yout think people should have of you? What expectations do you have for yourself?
Throughout my whole life, I've been given a lot to me; I've been given a chance to come to Punahou, a school that I thought I would never ever come to. I think that there are a lot of people that I know out there that have a lot of expectations for me. There expectations for me are far more greater than I thought it would be. My dad's expectations are quite demanding because he expects me to get really good grades and be perfect in anything that I do.
What expectations do I have for myself? There are many expectations that I have for myself. For myself, I expect myself to get really good grades like A's and B's nothing less. Other expectations that I have for myself are playing sports up to my potential meaning to play my game at a level that nobody else can play.

Quintessential Piece- What does football mean to me?
Well in my own words football means a lot to me because it is something that I pretty much been working on ever since I was like 6 years old. Every day after school me and my dad would always go to the park and just work out until we pretty much couldn't move; I know it was painful but I know that all that hard work wasn't for nothing it was for my own good and that was to come here and play football for Punahou. I was working as a Quarterback, I always wanted to be a quarterback because I always wanted to be like those guys on T.V.. I know that being a Quarterback takes a lot of skill but my father taught me everything there is to be a quarterback so knew that I knew that I was all good when I came to Punahou. This is something that has been quintessential to me for a really long time.
This is a picture of me and my parents who are pretty much my inspiration towards me in life.They sacrifice so much for me and without them I am nobody. Without them I wouldn't be at punahou. 1) If you were in a life or death situation, would you save yourself or the person that's endanger right next to you? Why?
Danielle:" If I could, I would save both myself and the person next to me. As selfish as this sounds I wouldn't want to die nor the person next to me to die."
2) How could someone like Zell Kravinsky give away 1 million dollars and say that it wasn't enough?
Danielle: " I think money is helpful sometimes but I feel that giving time is more important than money. Giving time can actually make difference in someone's life."
3)Do you think Kravinsky was a good role model?Explain.
Danielle: " I think he was a humanitarian but I feel that he put the world in front of his family. He wouldn't considerto be my role model but probably somebody elses."
4) Was Peter Singeer a good role model for the homeless society? Explain.
Danielle: " I don't think he was a role model for the homeless society but more of a writer that made people in general think about how there living their own lives and how they can help the homeless. He opened up people's eyes to what is going on in the world and used extreme examples that forced you to reflect on your own life."

One Question: What does it take to be a student athlete and why is it important?
What Does it Take:In order to become a student athlete to me is succeeding in both academics and athletics. There are many more meanings for becoming a student athlete like just playing any sport and being descent at it and getting okay grades, but I don't think that's acceptable. It takes a lot to become a student athlete but hard work is the key to becoming a student athlete. a student athlete is not something that just comes overnight, it is something that takes a lot of hard work and time. Becoming a student athlete is like a habit, you want to all the time to try and do what it takes to become it.
It's Important:Becoming a student athlete is so important to me because there are so many opportunities with just being a student athlete. Succeeding as a student athlete is so important in general because it shows that throughout youe whole life, ou had one goal and that was make it to college and live a successful life........to be continued....

Question I've Been Thinking About For a While:What does it take to be a student athlete is a question that I have been thinking about for about two weeks. I have a couple responses that may be correct for this esential question. In order to become a student athlete, you have to pretty much block off anything in your mind that doesn't have to do with athletics or academics. Doing this can help you because you will be more focused in your sports as well as your academics. Becoming a student athlete takes a lot of sacrifice, but only the ones that are willing to risk it will succeed.
Why Is It Important?It is so important in becoming a student athlete to me because if you are a student athlete, you are treated differently because you are treated as if you are a pro athlete. This is so important to me because it is something that my Mom and Dad have been trying to make me become ever since I was like 10 years old with making sure that I study any free time that I have and that I workout any free time that I have. I know I've said this about a million times but it takes a lot to become a student athlete because there is such a lot of responsibility that you have to take care of, like managing family, school, sports, and girlfriend.
Preparation For Becoming a Student Athlete:This is a video on what you need in order to be a student athlete. It shows the preparation and the will to wanting to be a student athlete. This video shows route and ambitions you will have to take in order to become a student athlete.
Maui Trip Reflection:Over the last week and a half, I went on a baseball trip to Maui which was incredible, I would never forget it because our coaches were telling us that the only way for us to get where we need to go, we have to be students in the classroom and players on the field meaning to tell us that when it is time to focus on our schoolwork we have to focus and when it is time to focus on sports it's time to focus on sports.

This is a video on how the NCAA commissioner tells everybody how the NCAA is taking advantage of our student athletes. He's talking about how the road to the Final Four is taking away sometime in the classroom. The NCAA commissioner is saying that becoming a student athlete is really important because it sets them for the future and that is to in whatever professional occupation they try to do.
What's a Student Athlete to me:In order to become a student athlete to me is to have the strive in the classroom as well as on the fiels on the court or field. I waant to be a student athlete because it is easier to get into college and it is easier to get scholarships in either academics or athletics.
