Literature Circle Reflection

During our Literature Circle discussion, Mrs. Watson gave us four discussion questions:
- How does religion play a role in their lives?
- What is Lock, Stock, and Barrel?
- Are there any metaphors for trees, vines, snake, seedling, rotted stump, spider, okapi?
- What is the significance of the last line of the book, “Walk forward into the light.”

In the first part of our discussion, we discussed the different religions each Price girl believes in.
We were saying that Rachel worships herself. She showed this by the hotel and money that also represents herself as a person. Leah who is refferred to as “The Creation.” Adah is a person that believes in science or also known as the “witch Doctor.”

During the second part of our discussion, we went over who represents Lock, stock, and barrel.
We concluded that on pg. 531 Rachel represents the lock which throws the past out and locks up the past emotions. Leah represents the barrel in meaning that the barrel represents going forward and setting things straight. Adah takes stock, one who observes but goes unnoticed but important.

In the third part of our discussion we went over the metaphors of nature throughout the whole last part of the book.
Then tree represents America. The vines strangle the Congolese people and Mobutu is powerful. Snake represents Mobutu being sneaky. The seedlings are the Villagers. The rotted stump was the different villages going bad. Spider represented getting rid of problems. We didn’t finish talking about the Okapi.

The last line in the book, “Walk forward in to the light,” means that it’s o.k., forgiveness, and don’t feel guilty anymore, to always feel redempted.

I feel that we had a good discussion because it was the end of the book and everybody was involved.

Literature Circle Reflection- Exodus

During our literature Circle discussion, we discussed about how Ruth May's journey was short meaning that she i=died but the main thing is that her soul still lives on.
We talked about Rachel during Exodus and that she was simple, she didn't change the least and she seems the same by not getting nothing out of it even though Ruth May died.
when Ruth May died, Leah's whole life changed totally; she doesn't fit in anywhere anymore because she feels awkward in america and in the Congo.
Adah also changed completely meaning that Adah and Leah both have the same feelings and they both don't feel happy in the end.
We talked about the different reactions of the Price girls in Exodus:
Rachel is still trying to be independent, gold digger, and uses people in cluding the husbands. Adah is good at expressing herself.Leah is lovestruck with Anatole and feels guiltfor ruth May and the Father.
During Exodus, we discussed about the similarities and differences between Leah and Orleanna and that they are both devoted to husbands and the difference is that Leah loves Anatole but Orleanna doesn't.
We also talked about the similarities and differences between Anatole and Nathan. The similarity between them both was that they both were passionate and they both believed in deep devotion. The difference between them both is that anatole cares for othersbut Nathan wants God's acceptance.
They are also were both willing to take risks like jail, and family.
one detail is that all the Price girls have guilt, find a redemption but they got diffenrent.
Rachel- having a hotel
Leah- Helping the Congo
Adah- Med. school, finding cure to get rid of disability.
Orleanna- her garden, separates herself, starts new life.
On pg. 444, Adah can now express herself because she is emotionally needy, and now needs mother's love beacause now she can focus on herself, rather than others.
*Nathan's death was like jesus's death-m he was burned on the cross by his own sin.
I feel that this discussion was reall y productive because we desribed the feelings of the Price sisters through Ruth May's death and Nathan's death and their similarities and differences.

Free Post- My Goal For Life

My one goal for my entire life is to graduate from high school pleasing my parents. along with that, I want to be able to get a full ride scholarship to either Oregon or Washington in either Baseball or Football. If i ever do get into College, I want to play professionally in either Baseball or Football because I want to do this for one person in my life and that is my Dad because he has sacrificed all his time taking off work just to make sure that me and him are out there on the field working out. I must admit working out with my Dad is like taking a walk through hell, you can't breathe, you can't walk, and you can't think; all you think about is how tired you are and how much water you want to drink. I know I shouldn't being saying these kind of things but it's true. This why this one goal is so important to me, for my family.

Literature Reflection- Bel and the Serpent

In our Literature Circle we reflected on the similarities and differences between Bantu and Muntu and we concluded that Bantu was a typical person more spiritually than physically and Muntu was a living person, a dead person, or a person that was not yet born.
We also talked about how Orleanna's section in the Bel and the Serpent was different than the other books.
In our Lit. Circle group we talked about the different reactions toward Ruth May's death from every one of the Price daughters perspective.
We talked about Leahs reaction which she was kind of shaken up about it. Rachel which in the book said, " not a vacation and go back to U.S. and live the same way." Rachel extents herself and talks about how she was kind of alright when ruth May died but more so feeling for her mother Orleanna.
Adah's reaction was that she had a palendrome which it says on page 360.
In our Literature Circle we also talked about how Kvundu was the blame for Ruth May's death because he planted the Green Mamba snake.
We also talked about how ironic it was for ruth May to die from a mamba snake when she always said that she wanted to be a Green Mamba snake.
